Last night I saw Martin Scorsese's new motion picture, SILENCE. It's a profound and deeply moving story about one man's struggle with his faith and the power of forgiveness. The cast, led by Andrew Garfield, features Adam Driver, Tadanobu Asano, Yosuke Kubozuka, Shinya Tsukamoto, Issey Ogata and Liam Neeson. Every performance is exceptional and the film is a technical wonder. This may be Scorsese's most restrained movie in his storied career; it is also his most personal. Do not shy away from it because it's rated R. I've seen more violence and senseless death in the Marvel super hero adventures. Likewise, the 2 hour 41 min running time doesn't feel like a slog. The plot and pacing are perfect.

Hey there! Last week I began a new column at Popdose.com called The Weekend Matinee. I'll be writing about movies and the memorable events around the films I've seen in my lifetime (not all of them great). If you were a fan of Basement Songs (the column or book), then I think you'll enjoy my new endeavor. The first movie I wrote about is GONE WITH THE WIND. I hope you'll check it out. Just follow the link. Thanks! http://ift.tt/2kB29kg

"When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered." -- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Happy Birthday to this girl. 18 TODAY! I'm at a loss for describing how proud I am of Sophie, how inspired I am by Sophie, how much I admire Sophie, and how much I love Sophie. Watching her grow into an adult has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I can't wait to see what she does next. I know she's going to hate that I posted this pic, but I can't help it. It's one of my favorites. The night Sophie was born, Bryan Adams was on the radio. The song was "(Everything I Do) I Do it for You", which may be a cheesy power ballad, but it holds a dear place in my heart. I'll be listening to it today, thinking of my baby girl, marveling at how far she's come, and the places she'll go. Happy Birthday, Sophie!!
